What does an Online Check In look like?

Online check ins can take many forms. could be as easy as an all student email asking for a response, but if you don't already have an email list that may be a hassle. If you have a Canvas Course, you can easily send emails to all your students and/or their parents using the 'Canvas Inbox' (see left). Here are a few options:

- - - - Canvas Inbox (email)

Though you could send an email through Outlook etc., the advantage of sending emails through Canvas is that your courses are already populated with your class lists/student emails AND parent emails. Choose all courses, all students, all parents, and send one message. It will send the email to the address that students and parents have designated as their preferred email for correspondence (this is done through Canvas Notifications), and hide the email addresses of other recipients.

- - - - Canvas Announcements

Canvas Announcements function similar to emails: when you create an Announcement, it automatically sends an email to everyone (parents and students can customize the settings through Canvas Notifications) in your course AND is available for students to view afterward (as long as 'Announcements' is viewable in your sidebar). You can toggle to send different announcements to different sections as well. You can also allow 'replies' to announcements, which is similar to discussions. **Note: Ask your LITT how to set an end for your announcement.

- - - - Canvas Discussions

Canvas Discussions do not generate emails, but they will allow students to interact. Ask a question, share a video, and have students reply. Allowing 'likes' or 'threaded replies' allows them to respond to each other. This can also be an alternative way for students to submit work and receive peer feedback. It is a safe a moderated way for them to engage, as they have to login with their BSD account to access Discussions. *Note*: Parents cannot see replies to discussions on Canvas. Here is a sample.

- - - - External Tools

Though there are plenty of options, the creativity and the internet provides a multitude of others. When adding to a module, you can select 'External URL'. Have you created a Padlet? A GoogleForm? Input the URL and students will see it in their module. Click next to see what that looks like.
